There are reports today that the USA has resumed bombing in Iraq and also that the deal is signed that would have St. Vincent de Paul Milwaukee spend five million of money for the poor for a thrift store in suburbs. I will verify this information tomorrow but, if true, will not for me stop me for struggling for justice and peace.
Today I spend two hours this morning helping an elderly friend get to a store to purchase a light bulb for her sewing machine and two hours this afternoon helping an elderly friend take a fishing poll back to Wal-Mart and get one that has a handle on the reel. Both friends have disabilities and with the poor bus system in Milwaukee they really have no way to accomplish these errands without a ride.
What do these two reported events have to do with my two, two hours of service to those in need? I am not sure but I feel the connection. Doing something concrete to help these two persons has, in my mind, something to do with stopping the killing in Iraq and the spending of money for poor on rich.
I would have said in the past the two hours of service to two persons in need was not as significant as efforts to stop these two events of bombing Iraq and spending money for poor on rich. But somehow I feel they are. Just as we need to Stop Racism one plant, in Thrift store, one Rim at a Time we need to treat all people we know or hear about as brothers and sisters. Talk and prayers alone without specific and concert actions will not work. In our defeats today, if what is said is true, there will be victories as long as we place people in need first. God’s blessed poor and marginalized, turn defeats into victories.
